The Dunedin Night Shelter Trust was established to support the homeless population of Dunedin.

History

The Dunedin Night Shelter began operations in November 2004, until to April 2006 the Trust used existing Dunedin facilities such as backpackers and camping grounds, to provide temporary accommodation for people in need.

It became clear during this time that Dunedin needed more permanent options, and in January 2005 the Trust appointed a Coordinator to help individuals and families find stable housing.

On 1 April 2006, the Trust secured a lease at 35 Maitland Street, opening its first shelter for homeless men. As word spread and demand grew, the shelter began welcoming women and, at times, whole families.

In April 2008, when the Maitland Street lease ended, the Trust moved to 87 Manor Place. The new premises housed up to eight people each night and remained the Trust's home until May 2012.

In June 2011, the Trust narrowed its focus to running the Night Shelter, putting its energy into staffing, funding and improving the service.

In May 2012, the Trust took on leases for two adjoining properties at 18 Lees Street, with the longer-term goal of buying them through community fundraising. The move also made room for Phoenix Lodge, which provides transitional housing for men leaving prison.

September 2015 brought another important step. Years of fundraising made it possible to buy the Lees Street premises outright. The shelter has operated from this site ever since, offering a safe place to stay for people who would otherwise have nowhere to go.

In December 2024 a full renovation of the building was completed, providing a generous living and food prep area for our guests and staff.

The Dunedin Night Shelter operates under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 (No. 1504117) and is registered with the Charities Commission (No. CC29266).

Project

The Shelter underwent significant renovations, which were completed in December 2024. With these upgrades, it can now accommodate up to 12 guests each night and features greatly improved communal living and food preparation areas.

The Trust began working with local architect Gary Todd in April 2022 to develop plans for the much needed upgrade of the Shelter at 18 Lees Street. His contribution of time and expertise in the development of these plans enabled the Trust to gain consent for the upgrade, marking the first major milestone in this large project.

In early 2024 the Dunedin Night Shelter Trust, Andrew Simms Dunedin, and Stewart Construction formed an agreement that enabled the commencement of the build. This support follows the $100k grant received from The Otago Community Trust, and the generous support of many other local Dunedin businesses. This huge amount of support has allowed the project to go ahead sooner than expected.

Why an upgrade?

The Trust is committed to ensuring compliance to enhance the overall capacity of the Night Shelter through the addition of accessible bedrooms and bathrooms. This reflects the dedication to inclusivity and accessibility, prioritising the well-being and comfort of all guests.

The development of a fit-for-purpose kitchen, living, and dining space ensures the Trust can continue its mission to enhance the quality of the facilities and services and continue to provide community meals for others in need.
