The Dunedin Night Shelter Trust was established to support the homeless population of Dunedin.
History
From November 2004 to April 2006 the Trust used existing Dunedin facilities such as backpackers and camping grounds to offer temporary accommodation to those in need. During this period, the Trust recognised the critical need for permanent housing solutions and in January 2005 appointed a Coordinator in to assist individuals and families in finding stable accommodation.
In June 2011, the Trust transitioned its focus entirely to the operation of the Night Shelter, redirecting resources towards staffing, funding, and improving services.
On April 1 2006, a lease was secured for a property at 35 Maitland Street, initially serving as a shelter for homeless men. As the shelter's reputation grew and its services expanded, the demographic seeking assistance diversified, prompting the inclusion of women and sometimes families.
In April 2008, following the termination of the lease for 35 Maitland Street, the Trust relocated to 87 Manor Place, accommodating up to eight individuals each night until May 2012. With a commitment to further improving facilities and expanding services, the Trust began to look for a more permanent solution.
In May 2012, it secured leases for two adjacent properties at 18 Lees Street, planning for the purchase of these premises through community fundraising efforts. This strategic move not only facilitated the establishment of Phoenix Lodge, providing transitional housing for men exiting prison, but also laid the foundation for the shelter's enduring presence in the community.
September 2015 marked a significant milestone for the Trust and the Shelter. The multiple fundraising endeavours enabled the purchase of the Lees Street premises. Since then, the shelter has operated from this address, serving as a lifeline for countless individuals experiencing homelessness.
The Dunedin Night Shelter operates under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 (No. 1504117) and is registered with the Charities Commission (No. CC29266).

Renovation
Project
The Shelter underwent significant renovations, which were completed in December 2024. With these upgrades, it can now accommodate up to 12 guests each night and features greatly improved communal living and food preparation areas.
The Trust began working with local architect Gary Todd in April 2022 to develop plans for the much needed upgrade of the Shelter at 18 Lees Street. His contribution of time and expertise in the development of these plans enabled the Trust to gain consent for the upgrade, marking the first major milestone in this large project.
In early 2024 the Dunedin Night Shelter Trust, Andrew Simms Dunedin, and Stewart Construction formed an agreement that enabled the commencement of the build. This support follows the $100k grant received from The Otago Community Trust, and the generous support of many other local Dunedin businesses. This huge amount of support has allowed the project to go ahead sooner than expected.
Why an upgrade?
The Trust is committed to ensuring compliance to enhance the overall capacity of the Night Shelter through the addition of accessible bedrooms and bathrooms. This reflects the dedication to inclusivity and accessibility, prioritising the well-being and comfort of all guests.
The development of a fit-for-purpose kitchen, living, and dining space ensures the Trust can continue its mission to enhance the quality of the facilities and services and continue to provide community meals for others in need.
